Do you know the sites your children are visiting when they are on the Internet? Do you know who your kids are chatting with? You don't have to be a computer expert to keep your child safe online but you do need to know a little bit.
One of the biggest challenges we as parents face is that an entire generation of children are living life in an online world that we as parents have very little experience.Over the past couple of years a number of lurking dangers have come to the forefront to leave our children unprotected of online exploitation.
What are the dangers?
The list might be longer than this but through my research I see four main dangers:
.1.Sexual Predators The whole concept of the Internet is the anonymity of the user which has not only made it a playground for sexual predators but also changed the face of sexual predators. If you haven't had a chance to see the Dateline NBC show to catch a predator or read your local newspapers the sexual predator is longer the weirdo in the green van across from the park. he is now the doctor, the stockbroker, the school teacher etc.In other words they are smart educated people who know our children's insecurities and build trust with them and make them feel good about themselves so your child will not tell you the parent. So alot of times children become willing victims.
2. Pornography . Some of the most popular sites on the Internet are porn sites.Pornography has become increasingly acceptable and accessible. This is not the kids stealing dad's playboy magazine.Today any kid can view anything from adult pornography to graphic videos, online chats, live nude peep shows, virtual sex parties or even porn that is illegal and can be prosecuted for viewing.
3. Posting Inappropriate Content; This one is becoming more and more popular.amongst kids. Children become inhibited because of the anonymity. of the Internet and do stuff and post things that are inappropriate.Kids take pictures of private parts and post and do other ridiculous things that they don't realize the Internet is forever this doesn't go away when you go for job interviews, or want to have your own kids.
4."Cyberbulling" is when a child, preteen or teen is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another child, preteen or teen using the Internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones.
